Welcome to William & Mary’s “21st Century Interdisciplinary Dictionary.” This work is presented to you by ENG 100/LING 100: “Language and Innovation.”

In our dictionary, you will find a world of new English words, buzzwords, keywords, and jargon in current use on our campus. It is divided into three “knowledge domains”: Arts and Humanities (ALV), Politics and Social Science (CSI), and Technology and Natural Science (NQR). Within each of these categories, you will find entries, arranged alphabetically, that provide historical and cultural information about each word, including: etymologies, sociolectal observations (who uses the word, who doesn’t, and why); survival predictions (our best guess as to whether these words will last, and if so, where and with whom), and “lexopinions,” our ideas and our feelings about these words, as currently used.
